The greens have now been mowed down to a summer height of cut of 3.2mm. They will be lightly verti-cutt every week/two weeks. This helps thin out the grass plant and make the ball roll truer. Light top dressings will take place to help true out the surface a light dressing then bruised in and lightly watered doesn’t make the green worse this is a myth when this takes place it helps the ball roll. When golfers say oh know they have put a bit sand on them again wont be putting well this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Monthly tinning will still be taking place through the summer I use an 8mm tine so even after its done it doesn’t affect the roll that much and after two to three days all holes are grown-in. This is important for growing root depth which we need here as the rooting is very shallow! Also for gas and air exchange and to de-compact the surface.
Tees and Approaches:
Height for both have come down to 10mm. Both have been seeded not a lot took at all as soil temperatures were still too low. Even with a bit of sun in the sky doesn’t mean the soil temps are high. For example 15degree air temp will only be around 6.5 to 7 degree soil temp. Now we have a bit of warmth they will be seeded again.
Monthly sprays still taken place. All fairways will be grassed raked to try to remove some of the dead matter from last summer and to promote new growth. Taken a lot longer to come back the I expected but if we remember back there wasn’t any grass on them even up to October so a lot of new grass plant needed as nearly all died off. An insight to the land tight here and why taking a long time is that there is only about 3 inches of soil then straight down to gravel so even small amounts of rain not really helping as this passes through the soil very quickly and not a lot then straight into the gravel bed.
All cut rough, tees, approaches and fairways will be strayed for weeds week of the 29th. I will try and spray as much of the long rough as possible cant get it all as trees and the sprayer to big to get through them.
All green side bunkers are topped up with sand. All got a depth of 4 inch then watered then gone over with the waker plate to firm then up and just leave the top fluffy. This also helps to hopefully not to get plugged lies. 7th white and 11th white tees open to play and the 13th will be in play before the senior club champs.
