April has been a very active month on the golf course with the usual competitions, Summer knockout matches getting under way, club matches taking place and the start of the ever popular Thursday night roll ups. The course has dried out and should be in great shape for the Summer.
The first competition of the month was the midweek medal won by Dave Smith with a net 62 and Tanveer Abbas carding a gross 72. The following Saturday saw Matthew Williams secure the weekend medal with a 64 on countback from James Kennedy, following up on his success in the March medal. Max Teixeira took the prize for the best gross with a 73.
Saturday the 13th saw over 80 players compete for the committee cup in teams of two. The result was close with the Adamsons, Angela and Clive, victorious with 41 points, one point ahead of Chris Gosling and Trevor Gray.
Alex Hunt scored an excellent 46 points in the midweek stableford on 16 April and the first Thursday nine hole roll up, or “club night”, was won by Elieser Garcia with 21 points on countback from Malcolm Hurst.
The mens’ team secured two excellent victories in April, four to two against Bishopswood at the start of the month and four and a half to one and a half against Hadden Hill in glorious conditions on 20 April. The seniors team also played twice during the month, losing four to two against Sherfield Oaks on 4 April, but victorious against Wokefield Park on 10 April, four to two.
Well done to all who have taken part in the matches. There are more coming up so please set your availability on the website if you wish to play.
Another notable success for the club during the month was a victory by men’s vice captain David Mehigan in the Club Company captains challenge held at Castle Royle on 14 April, beating the captains from all the other clubs in the group.
One of the main events of the golfing year, captains day, takes place on Saturday 13 July with the midweek captains challenge on the preceding Wednesday. If you are interested in sponsoring a hole for either event or can contribute a prize for the raffles or auction then please let us know. The cost of a hole sponsorship starts at £50 and includes entry into the competition. All proceeds go to our charity, Launchpad.
The Duncan Trophy (BCLGA) match saw Mapledurham Ladies play Reading Ladies at Reading GC on Saturday, March 23rd 2019. ANITA RYAN (Ladies Vice Captain), DEBBIE LEES, SHWETHA RAMU, CARINA GANDY and TRACEY SMITH represented the club, supported by 5 noble caddies. The match was closely fought with 2 matches going to the 19th hole and one match won on the 18th. Reading Ladies won 3-2 but our ladies did the club proud and I thank all players and their caddies for showing the club in a good light.
The AUSTRALIAN SPOONS qualifying competition has been concluded and I wish CAROL COOKSLEY and AUDREY TURTON the best of luck in the next round at Leamington Golf and Country Club on July 16th 2019 after they won the Mapledurham qualifying rounds with 39 stableford points.
CAROL COOKSLEY will also be representing the club in the Midland South Regional England Golf Medal Final on May 8th 2019 at Buckingham Golf Club. Carol achieved this honour by playing the best 4 rounds of golf in the LEGM competitions held at Mapledurham in 2018. We wish Carol the best of luck. The 2019 LEGM competitions have started for qualification in 2020.
There is plenty more great golf coming up during the Summer for everyone to enjoy, and don’t forget the club championships over the weekend of 15 and 16 June. The sign up for this opens on 4 May. Let’s hope for more of the weather we have just enjoyed over the Easter holiday (but with some rain overnight please to keep the course in good condition).
